The Jewel in the Ionian Sea
ZAKYNTHOS

Zakynthos, a stunning Greek island located in the sparkling Ionian Sea, is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, dramatic cliffs, and vibrant natural beauty that captivates every visitor. Famous for the iconic Navagio Beach, often called Shipwreck Beach, it offers not only breathtaking views but also a rich history that draws travelers from around the world. The ship used to carry contraband but failed to navigate around sharp rocks under the sea. Trapped between a sheer vertical cliff and rough sea, the captain was eventually arrested. As the local fishermen in the island got the news, they came in with their small boats and looted the contraband. Instead of benefiting themselves, the whole island enjoyed the cigarettes and rum.
Visitors can explore lush, verdant landscapes, charming traditional villages, and lively seaside towns, making Zakynthos the perfect blend of both relaxation and adventure. Additionally, the island serves as a vital sanctuary for Caretta caretta, the endangered loggerhead sea turtles, adding important ecological significance to its wide-ranging appeal.
The island did not disappoint when it comes to the clarity of the sea. Water was calm and clear to allow us to enjoy the world under the sea. We were able to swim with fishes and the highlight was to swim out to the sea to see Caretta caretta.
As always, local cuisine is a big part of our holiday to experience local culture. Once again, Greek cuisine shone with amazing local produce from land and sea and culinary skills both in established restaurants to small local tabernas.
