Visit Kernow 2015

by Seer Oon Hor

Recently, we visited dear friends of ours in Cornwall where they have put their roots down. They were so generous in offering their home and time whilst we were there. Our friends have amazing culinary skills and served us a three course meal! We had pan-seared scallop to start followed by steak and ale pie and vanilla panna cotta with raspberry coulis to finish. One word: Yummm. The next morning, we first visited Falmouth, where we had amazing crab lunches. We then walked along the coast while enjoying the sight of sea and rather beautiful large houses. In the evening, we dined at the wonderful Gravy Boesti Restaurant in Truro. Food was generous yet very tasty and well presented.

The next day, we drove to St Ives in the sea mist. The town is made up of a network of little alleys, a bit like Venice. You can see many quaint holiday lets no matter where in St Ives you are. We had a giant Cornish pasty along the way. We then took the scenic route to Sennen Cove, where the beautiful scenery made our jaws drop. From there, we enjoyed the journey to Land's End by foot. Fortunately, the sea mist slowly lifted exposing a wonderful vista from Land's End.

We lazed around and enjoyed the company of our dear friends the next morning. They took us to Godrevy, where seals take a break from the sea. We spent half an hour just to spot how many seals there were. They were perfectly camouflaged in the rocks.

The next day, we headed to Perranporth for our surfing lessons. We had two sessions, am and pm. Henry and Rachael, our surfing tutors went through warm up routines followed by surfing techniques. Soon were we're off! Our first stand was memorable. The ride was smooth and you could feel the need for speed. By the end of the day I was so tired I simply laid down on the beach. We later dined at Kota Kai, Porthleven where they served us superb fusion dishes. Their chilly, coconut and lemon grass mussels were to die for. We even ordered additional bread just to finish off the sauce. Salt and pepper squid was simple yet crunchy on the outside. The mains pork Tonkatsu and Spicy Laksa with coconut milk rice, were no less than perfection. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of fusion food produced by Kota Kai. Click on thumbnails to enlarge.

We left Cornwall the next morning with a long drive along the Jurassic Coast in Dorset and Durdle Door. We finished off our holiday with a wonderful dinner at The Pig, Beaulieu. It was a wonderful partly self-sustained restaurant set on wonderful grounds of the New Forest. They had vegetable patches, a humongous greenhouse, pigs, chickens and quails. According to their waiter, Pig Extraordinaire is their signature dish. It was essentially a roasted half pig's head (teeth on, molars and all!) with tender cheek meat under amazingly crispy crackling. I must admit, it is one of the best crackling I have ever had. Needless to say we polished it all off.

Another fantastic getaway, visiting friends, sight seeing, rest & relax and of course, great food.

Until next time. Be good.
